Our Process

Leather

Most leather produced globally is tanned using Chromium. Chrome tanning is an 18-24 hour process that yields chromium variants that are extremely toxic to humans and animals unless subject to further chemical processing that costs the earth.

For this reason, Marrakesh exclusively uses full grain vegetable tanned cowhide leather. Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest leather tanning methods. Raw cowhide is submersed in a mixture of natural tannins (mainly tree bark) for 6-12 weeks.

Vegetable tanned products will sun-tan with age, take the shape of their contents overtime, and mature into beautiful, personal companions.

The Elbow Grease

Every Marrakesh product is handmade in our Ho Chi Minh Studio. While making things by hand is a much slower and more difficult process, we think it’s worth it.

Handmade products use thicker thread with a higher tension, and the designs aren’t constrained by what can fit into a sewing machine. We support skilled craft that cannot be outsourced or automated, to produce high-quality, long-life products.
